Books about Strong Women for Girls and Boys

In the spirit of International Women’s day, I wanted to share this set of books we found. I was quite excited when I stumbled across these books while browsing Amazon. The set is called “I look up to…” and each book has a strong woman of our world to learn about. The content is presented in a very simple manner, easy to understand for small kids, and the messages are generic enough to apply to many people and situations.

I also like the idea of my daughter learning the concept of a role model. Understanding that there are people we can look up to and learn from. And maybe looking for role models in her life later on.

One of my favourite books in this set is about Serena Williams. I am of course biased, as I follow tennis and WTA tour in particular and the topic of sport is close to my heart. Also perhaps the topic of sport is a bit easier to understand for smaller children. One of the messages in this book is that to become good at something you need to practice a lot and be confident that you are good. When my daughter gets frustrated trying to learn a new skill I remind her that everyone needs to practice a lot, even Serena Williams. We talk about the book, my girl calms down and tries again. I find this very helpful and we remembered this book many times in our everyday life. In particular, it helped my daughter in learning to ride a scooter.

I also like that many of these books promote education and allow us to look at it from various angles. We talk about going to school, learning to read and write, and enjoying the studies. My daughter’s favourite book is Malala at the moment.

There is a lot more in these books my daughter doesn’t yet fully understand. I feel they will be giving us more food for thoughts and conversations as my daughter grows and I am looking forward to sharing what I know and have those conversations with my girl.
